Press Release Roundup: April 1

posted April 2, 2016, 9:49 am by Carlita | Filed Under Music News | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

Mayer Hawthorne

1459531301

Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Mayer Hawthorne is releasing his fourth full-length record, Man About Town, on April 8th via Vagrant Records/BMG. Today, fans can stream the record in its entirety on Pandora. Listen here: http://pdora.co/ManAboutTown

On Man About Town, Hawthorne is back to handling the lion’s share of production. He also played damn near every instrument on the album and penned every track. His songwriting pulls from his life and observations; his heartache and joy. Sometimes it’s groovy, other times he’s vulnerable and sincere. It’s the shit people listen to when they wanna get drunk and stoned and sentimental. The reason? Mayer Hawthorne stays making that timeless, soulful, baby-making music.

Earlier this year, Mayer brought his three bands together (Tuxedo, Jaded Incorporated, Mayer Hawthorne) for two sold out revue shows at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles. For fans that weren’t lucky enough to attend, you can watch the highlights below:

In support of the new record, Mayer will be kicking off his US headline tour on May 4th in Santa Ana at the Observatory. The tour takes Mayer across the states before wrapping up in Las Vegas on July 8th. Fans who purchase tickets to see Mayer live will receive a digital copy of Man About Town upon release on April 8th. A full list of dates can be found below.

Pre-order Man About Town today via iTunes, and receive instant downloads of album tracks ‘Lingerie & Candlewax,’ ‘Love Like That,’ and ‘Cosmic Love.’

Introducing: The Maension

posted March 29, 2016, 8:00 am by Kevin Sellers | Filed Under Music News | comment Leave a Comment

In a musical mainstream stuck on dredging the past without a clear view of a promising future, the self-dubbed “FutuRock” (Future Rock) of the international collective The Maension is making a real push at reverting the trend. With an original sound that cultivates comparisons to a myriad of hard rock staples, The Maension manage to completely dodge pigeon-holed niches and industry pressures. 12898415_10154043394288699_4550126235334630376_oConstant touring and a recent debut LP only scratch the surface of a story that, while short in terms of years, stretches across oceans and a seemingly endless road of live performances that are fueling the growing fire. As more and more people learn their name, The Maension are certainly looking forward; but their focus settles squarely on the next stage, the next city, the next gig.

Recently I had the opportunity to immerse myself in their debut LP “Aevolution” (check the review here) and had a chance to shoot a few questions to the band. Frontman Mark Maension took the bulk of the answers, and you get a real sense of where the band is coming from, where they want to go and the vital importance of living (and sharing) the moments in between. Keep scrolling afterwards for a playlist of my favorite moments from “Aevolution” and to watch their most recent video for “Chrysalis”, featuring Fred Durst (more on that in the interview!). After months of prep and internet teases, the official video for Funkadelic’s “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?” remix has arrived and it’s got the whole gang onboard. Featuring contributions from Kendrick Lamar (who spits the opening bars of his “Blue Faces” demo at the top of the cut) and OG Comptonian, Ice Cube, the visual follows the intergalactic pursuits of of George Clinton and the torchbearers of funk, all of which co-pilot the mothership as they descend upon an interplanetary soiree. Join Funkadelic, Kendrick Lamar and Ice Cube for a ride on the mothership in the video below and hold tight for the next transmission. You won’t want to miss it.

Introducing: Cardye

Cardye Pic2

Since an early age, Raleigh repping R&B artist Cardye’s never been afraid to take matters into his own hands. Recalling his first musical memory in church at 10 years old, not satisfied with the way the church band sounded, he took it upon himself to get behind the kit and just start playing, finishing the rest of the service and’s been hooked on music ever since. Continuing this self-starter theme, he taught himself to play the bass and loved learning to play the electric guitar “because of the amount of freedom you can have on any song at any time”, blurring boundaries allowing one to “ play in and out of the box”.

Cardye_photo
When considering early influences and musical heroes, Cardye credits guitar greats Stevie Ray Vaughn and John Mayer for solidifying his love for the axe and mentions Lauryn Hill and The Roots as additional sources of inspiration. Along this early stimulus thread, if he assembled a hypothetical music fest at 13 years old, he’d enlist Aaliyah, Common, Jay-Z and Michael Jackson to play, creating a line-up any R&B and hip-hop fan would pay to see. Although his love for these genres is evident, Cardye steps out of the comfort zone and mentions Kenny G as a surprising find within his music collection, unknowingly soaking up the sax sounds on early family trips to visit his grandfather.

Jazz Street: Doris Day

posted March 17, 2016, 1:07 pm by Nathaniel Lathy | Filed Under Jazz Street, Throwback Thursday | comment Leave a Comment

Sometimes a voice is just so good, you just can’t get enough of it. Doris_Day There are some iconic voices and Doris Day had one of those voices. I started listening to Day’s songs through her movie acting career. Movies such as “My Dream is Yours” and “Romance on the High Seas” were musicals featuring her enormous singing talent. Also, in non-musical films, you could be treated to a song by Day in the opening credits. In recent years, I’ve found myself downloading some of her songs. And there’s the chance to stream her songs.

It’s rewarding to hear her sing without seeing her infectious smile. Not all of her movies were good, but many of them were. It’s hard to think of any songs off the top of my head which I don’t like. It can’t just be song selection, though it helps when she’s singing great material such as “Secret Love,” “When I fall In Love” and “Sentimental Journey.” There was also the way she could sing. It’s been written about Day, she sang as if she was singing to the listener individually. Still, the personality and character issues weighed in her favor. In an era, where celebrities seem to be in competition to behave poorly, Day benefited from her wholesome image. It still makes her enjoyable to listen to. Swing music is appealing in part because it represents a time when popular music was family friendly. This is not to say it’s impossible to enjoy the various types of entertainment in today’s PG-13 world. But there’s something to be said for enjoying a time, when traditional values thrived. There was no better ambassador for the golden age of Hollywood along with 40s and 50s popular music than Doris. Even when Rock emerged in the 50s there was still room for Day on the pop charts. And there should be room for her on any music lover’s playlist.

StubHub, one of the world’s largest ticket marketplaces, has announced its 2016 lineup for its three day showcase of daytime and evening performances at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival on March 16, 17 and 18. Hosted at Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden, the diverse lineup includes acclaimed global artists from various musical genres, including Miike Snow, Baio, The Kills, Bloc Party, Ghostland Observatory and X Ambassadors. Festival attendees must RSVP for daytime sessions in advance at culturecollide.com/stubhub2016.

This second year promises to be an equally sensational experience with a lineup that spans rock, electro/synthpop,
garage rock, bluegrass, Americana and representing a variety of countries including Canadian act The Strumbellas, Swedish artist Miike Snow, Australian act Tigertown and UK acts Eliot Sumner, The Crookes and Lawrence Taylor. Performances will begin at 2 p.m. each day and continue through the evening, allowing fans to enjoy more than two-dozen bands in an intimate venue, along with Banger’s famous homemade sausages, 100+ beers on tap and relaxed outdoor setting.

“As a globally-growing brand in both the music and tech industries, activating at SXSW is a seamless fit for
StubHub,” said Justin Finn, Head of Event Marketing and Sponsorships. “Building off all our success here last year,
we’re excited to go even bigger and better in 2016, bringing more unique performances from emerging and global
