Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across my virtual desk.

Bright Light Social Hour

Download the MP3 of “Wendy Davis” FREEE!
Last night we found ourselves at the SB5 protest at the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin. After the vote went through, we ran home to our studio and wrote and recorded this song in a few hours and made this video with footage we took on our phones. We just finished it a few minutes ago. Watch the video for “Wendy Davis”:

Wait For Green

UNSW7 alumni has announced the release of their latest EP, “The Deep End EP”.

“Our upcoming release “The Deep End EP” has a California drenched vibe, that showcases many aspects of Wait For Green’s range.

Our new single “Castaway” is an aggressive surf reggae song that touches on the fact that many feel more at home far away from all the politics and pollution in city life. Sometimes you need to just be by yourself and get away.”

“Another song available, “Rising” is a new approach for the band seeing that it incorporates subs, a hip hop beat, synths, and tripped out surf guitars. The song is about knowing that everything will turn out for a reason. We can’t predict the future but we have the strength to” keep rising” through our struggles, because we know things will have to pay off at one point.”

Black Joe Lewis

Black Joe Lewis have unveiled the track listing and album art for their brand new full-length LP, Electric Slave, to be released on August 27 on Vagrant Records. Check out the album art above and the track listing below. You can listen to the album’s opening track “Skulldiggin” at the link here:

“Skulldiggin” was hailed by Consequence of Sound as “a deafening first shot in the band’s war against technology-induced devolution. Over the mortar fire of crashing cymbals and the bombastic wail of a ferocious guitar, Lewis screams and shouts about mind control. And when his voice gets swallowed up by the feedback, it’s an intriguing extension of the anti-technology commentary.”

Most of Electric Slave was produced by GRAMMY award winner Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power, Modest Mouse) and recorded at Church House Studios in Austin, TX. Three of the new tracks (“Skulldiggin,” “Dar Es Salaam,” “My Blood Ain’t Runnin’ Right”) were recorded and produced by John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St. Vincent, Okkervil River) at Elmwood Studios in Dallas.

The band will tour supporting Electric Slave beginning in September, playing a number of shows along the east coast including a show at New York’s Terminal 5 on September 26. For complete itinerary, please see below.

Acetate Records announces the addition of legendary Seattle band Supersuckers to their roster. The as of yet untitled album will be recorded at Willie Nelson’s famous Arlyn Studio, in Austin, TX. It will be the band’s ninth studio record and their first since 2008’s Get It Together, released on the band’s own Mid-Fi Recordings label.

“The band is really firing on all cylinders here lately and we’re super stoked to get into the very same studio where we recorded Sacrilicious (SubPop, 1995) and create this rock-n-roll juggernaut,” writes frontman Eddie Spaghetti. “We’re also excited that we’ll be releasing the record through Acetate Records, a new home for us and we’re all in the honeymoon stages of the relationship now, so things are rosy and looking up.”

Royal Thunder

June 25, 2013, Philadelphia – Royal Thunder are offering a free download of their three-song, acoustic CVI:A EP via both Amazon and Bandcamp.

The acoustic renditions of “Whispering World,” “Parsonz Curse” and “Black Water Vision,” were recorded in early 2013 and followed an incredibly active period for the young Atlanta band, who released their debut full-length album CVI in May of 2012. In the intervening months, Royal Thunder crisscrossed the country numerous times with a variety of bands including Dillinger Escape Plan, Valient Thorr and Pallbearer.

CVI was one of the most highly-cited debut albums of 2012 with Spin calling it a “stunning breakthrough,” Rolling Stone describing the trio’s music as “heavy with the meaty, base elements of early-Seventies British blues,” NPR saying the album is “a portrait of songs that have been painstakingly lived-in” and Revolver Magazine calling the release “essential.” Parsonz also appeared on the cover of Decibel Magazine’s inaugural “Women In Metal” issue

Royal Thunder, who recently performed at Bonnaroo, return to the road later this summer, joining label mates Baroness for both a North American and European trek.

PASTE.COM Presents: Radiohead Live at Tramps June 1, 1995

Recorded at New York City’s Tramps just three months after the release of their second album, The Bends, this exclusive concert sees Radiohead beginning to push the sonic envelope. Still two years prior to the group’s international breakthrough OK Computer, the performance captures a more straighforward Radiohead, the very moment the band was beginning to not only break ground in America, but singer and songwriter Thom Yorke was finding the more cryptic and expressive voice that would become the hallmark of the bands later releases. As such, this high-quality recording is a demonstration of Radiohead at their full rock & roll powers.

radioheadliveDL Over the course of this performance, Radiohead leans heavily on songs from The Bends, performing the album nearly in its entirety, including all five singles, with five additional numbers, all from the band’s debut album Pablo Honey (including “Creep”). Despite the emotional weight of the material, the band often find high and exalted moments, typified by the final encore performance of “Street Spirit.” Here Yorke ruminates about his own feelings of insignificance over Jonny Greenwood’s ringing guitar arpeggios, bringing the performance to an ecstatic close with the final lyric, “…immerse your soul in love.”

Devil Driver

The band recorded the album in Florida at Audio Hammer Studios and vocals in Los Angeles, CA at Dez’s home studio with Mark Lewis (Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, All That Remains) handling production duties. DEVILDRIVER has worked with Lewis previously on “Beast” and “The Last Kind Words” and producer Mark Lewis’s prolific leadership of the new school of metal has yet again helped DEVILDRIVER deliver another Epic heavy Metal record. This record melds what the band does best. In your face power as well as the California Groove sound the band pioneered.

DEVILDRIVER has always been a band on a three-pronged mission: Work hard, rock harder, and kick as many asses as possible in the process. The band tours forever and has since its beginnings. Their live performances and circle pits are as legendary as their music.

The band will be hitting the road worldwide in support of Winter Kills. Touring as always will be a focal point for the band. The US can expect to see them this fall and winter with Europe and the rest of the globe coming in 2014 and beyond.

Of Monsters and Men

Bushmills Village: 21st June 2012: Global artists including Of Monsters and Men, together with friends Foy Vance, Willy Mason and Iain Archer, gave electrifying performances last night at Bushmills Live: the festival of handcrafted whiskey and music which took place among the barrels at the Old Bushmills Distillery.

The intimate two-day festival on Ireland’s north coast was attended by 500 music and whiskey fans. Attendees from countries spanning from Bulgaria and Portugal to Russia were encouraged to drink responsibly and enjoy the line-up of world-class performers. The artists performed a series of intimate gigs in centuries-old buildings at the Old Bushmills Distillery, where the art of whiskey-making has been practiced for generations.

Of Monsters and Men’s Ragnar Þórhallsson said: “Last night was unlike any other gig we’ve played before. We have performed in many venues in cities all around the world, but this one, in a whiskey distillery, was something very special. The atmosphere was great and we loved it. We would be honoured to play here again.”

These global superstars were joined by emerging indie artists Bear’s Den and Sons and Lovers, together with David C Clements and VerseChorusVerse, recipients of the inaugural Bushmills Live Legacy Fund. This is a trust of £20,000 set up by Bushmills™ Irish Whiskey and Third Bar, an artist development company run by last year’s headliner, Snow Patrol’s lead singer, Gary Lightbody and Davy Matchett, curators of the fund.

Master Distiller at the Old Bushmills Distillery, Colum Egan, said: “This was an incredible night for Bushmills Irish Whiskey and for music lovers. Last night, we welcomed both globally-established artists and emerging talent to our home on Ireland’s north coast. Their music, like our whiskey, represents the very best in hand craftsmanship. He added: “It was fantastic to see so many friends come to the distillery, enjoy the music and of course share a glass of Bushmills.”
