Sometimes a voice is just so good, you just can’t get enough of it. Doris_Day There are some iconic voices and Doris Day had one of those voices. I started listening to Day’s songs through her movie acting career. Movies such as “My Dream is Yours” and “Romance on the High Seas” were musicals featuring her enormous singing talent. Also, in non-musical films, you could be treated to a song by Day in the opening credits. In recent years, I’ve found myself downloading some of her songs. And there’s the chance to stream her songs.

It’s rewarding to hear her sing without seeing her infectious smile. Not all of her movies were good, but many of them were. It’s hard to think of any songs off the top of my head which I don’t like. It can’t just be song selection, though it helps when she’s singing great material such as “Secret Love,” “When I fall In Love” and “Sentimental Journey.” There was also the way she could sing. It’s been written about Day, she sang as if she was singing to the listener individually. Still, the personality and character issues weighed in her favor. In an era, where celebrities seem to be in competition to behave poorly, Day benefited from her wholesome image. It still makes her enjoyable to listen to. Swing music is appealing in part because it represents a time when popular music was family friendly. This is not to say it’s impossible to enjoy the various types of entertainment in today’s PG-13 world. But there’s something to be said for enjoying a time, when traditional values thrived. There was no better ambassador for the golden age of Hollywood along with 40s and 50s popular music than Doris. Even when Rock emerged in the 50s there was still room for Day on the pop charts. And there should be room for her on any music lover’s playlist.
