The music community sadly lost one of its preeminent and pioneering members on Sunday, October 27th when Lou Reed passed away at the age of 71. Mr. Reed will probably best be remembered for being one of the founders of The Velvet Underground, a group so avant-guard that Andy Warhol managed them in the ’60s. He also had a prolific solo career that spanned four decades and saw him contribute vocals as late as last year to “The Wanderlust” by Canadian indie rockers Metric. Actually, there aren’t many active guitarists today who aren’t at least a little indebted to the “ostrich” tuning innovator. Spend some time remembering the genius and beauty of Lou Reed by listening to “Perfect Day” from his tour de force 1972 album Transformer, and be thankful for the gifts he left behind. (Yes, even Lulu!)
