If my calculations are accurate, my promise and subsequent breaking of said promise to do one of these every week means that I know owe you 20 edtions of my Random Playlist Review. I know, grab those tissues.

Prince - Purple Rain

Why do I like Prince? His charisma, his passion and the beautiful way he has with words and with a big cheesy anthemic guitar solo. He's got it where most pop stars never had it, and I think most of the ambiguity towards him is due not to his eccentric manner, but his easily-overlooked talents.

The Rolling Stones - Mother's Little Helper

Is this song about the diet pill craze some middle-aged women got into back in the day or something? It reminds me more, in my modern context, of the dependency on prescription drugs this country seems to be developing. Love that simple little melody. Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo...

A'tris - Automatic Doors

A song that deserves, no, beckons for major music media's attention; this is the sound of tomorrow, I'm convinced. I am convinced after a recent interview (look for it soon!) that these guys are serious about making great music; and great music is what they're making. A song like this proves two things; they're seriously underrated songwriters, and that a hook can make all the difference between a good song and a memorable one.

Ministry - Radar Love

For pure, fist-pumping metal excitement, no album so far this year has satisfied me like Cover Up, Ministry's swansong studio effort featuing Jourgenson'd "covers" of some great classic rock songs (not including the Louie Armstrong cover..). This might be my favorite one, if their shockingly well-done recreation of the Stones' "Under My Thumb" isn't considered. This song, a Golden Earring (can you say one hit wonders?) classic, is amped up on an ounce of crank and the original's more mid-paced groove is turned over to rapid-fire percussion and vigorous amounts of that Mnistry vitriol, the tempo cranked towards unexpected destinations. I keep going back to this album again and again and again...

Swans - Blind

I'm still in the dark on this band; I've heard their name dropped in many different circles, from Cure fans to Sunn0)) fans and GY!BE fans so I figure there's something here to be heard. Apparently their history is very deep and their evolution rather complex; but their influence, from my persspective and from the relatively small portion of their discography I've been checking out, is widely felt indeed. This song, like quite alot of their material as far as I can see, is extremly dark in lyrical nature and tone; it speaks of the blindness of youth and the regret of the aged for not having seen when seeing was truly important. It may reveal chunks of this vocalist's personality. Goth fans take note; these guys may have been doing it better a long time ago than most can claim today.

Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast (Live - Rock In Rio)

One of the coolest metal songs ever written played in front of about 100,000 screaming fans = pure musical glory at it's very finest.

Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues

The song that truly made the man a household name. A simple story of a mournful prisoner's regret. Timeless in it's meanings and in it's sound. That up-tempo chugging rhythm he and his band managed to put together is best summed up by Bob Dylan, who said after first hearing Johnny live, "It sounds like a voice from the middle of the earth". His roots were definitely deeper than deep. His music always came with a sense of honesty that just couldn't be ignored; it is what kept him in the spotlight for almost his entire life.

Isn't is great how Iron Maiden's music has stood the test of time? Listening to classics like Number Of The Beast still sounds fresh today. Even though it's like 25 years old. I can't wait to see them next month! They were on my list of "must see before I die". Next up is Tom Waits.
