My 'New' Thing and My Other 'New' Thing

It's not a new thing, it's a closeted thing. No, no, no. I'm not gay. My dad would like to say that the music I listen to does in fact breed homosexuality--yet, I've never seen tangible proof of this so I think this means my dad hasn't a leg to stand on. My secret is that other then a deep-seeded passion for old Pokemon game emulators for the PC, I love electronica. There, I've said it. It's not remotely embarassing but for a person such as myself who emulates the persona of a post-hardcore/pop-punk lover, an electronica obsession just doesn't seem to fit.

I don't even know where to begin. So, I'm going to end it there and move on to my other musical love: pop. Now, I'm not going to be like some websites whose attitudes I'll never fathom but whose reviews I read simply because of how amazing concise they are (Pitchfork) and say Rihanna's "Umbrella" is the song of the year. No, that song is downright atrocious and is only tolerable when remixed by stellar DJs. But Britney Spears, Usher (R&B, pop, tomato, tomahto), Justin Timberlake, not Clay Aiken, Mika, these are all quality pop acts.

So what does this mean? I've decided to really bring a new twist to Musicemissions.com by embracing these artists and reviewing them. The mainstream is not to be ignored simply because it is the mainstream. Not all radio-driven artists are horrible (Clay Aiken is, Pink is) and I think by reviewing them, that attitude could be cast upon you readers. I have recently reviewed Lily Allen and M.I.A. albums and feel I did them justice. I'm not sure what I have planned next. Oh--and fear not, I haven't lost touch with my old taste in music. I will still be reviewing other releases in the rock genre. I've decided to just be more well-rounded, partly for everyone's sake, mostly for mine. That fits my persona.

As you know there is a lot of music out there... my understanding of this site, as well as most music blogs (like my own) is to expose good music.  Because there is so much out there, good and crappy, I'm interested in hearing about anything that is good.

I, like you it sounds like, have given up on radio (although our local college radio station is pretty good sometimes)/MTV/ Rolling Stone/'force fed' (I'm not really sure who's doing the forcing most of us live in a world where the net gives us all kinds of access to new stuff, legally and illegally) so it is news to me when there is a good major label record - I'm interested in hearing about that from bright people who's opinion I respect.  So, frankly, I don't see the point in categorizing beyond good and bad - mainstream/indie - are kind of false distinctions.

Your Arcade Fire example is a prime example.  They are on a, quote, indie, label - but signed a major distribution and publishing deal with EMI (I understand they're quite big).  They own their masters, are not slaves to their corporate overlords, but are none-the-less part of the machine.  And, if you want to stay away from stuff like that all together then I think it creates an atmosphere where people don't really have a measuring stick for other people's taste.  As you may be able to tell, I'm all for letting him post whatever reviews he wants... nobody has to read it, and the people who are going to turn away from your site because of a few 'mainstream' reviews are people, in my estimation, who are too snobby to talk to anyways.

If you don't want to let 'Symph' post his JT review I suppose that's up to you... it is, after all, your site.

Something to think about I hope.

Mainstream music is not really material for this site. That being said, we have been known to cover a few mainstream artists/albums but only up and coming ones. Also, as you have pointed out with Arcade Fire, they are on an independent label making them one of the exceptions. The purpose of a site such as Music Emissions is to discover new music, not give platinum artists more press. If your average mom or dad have heard of a band, they probably aren't material for this site.

Does that make sense? Music Emissions should be used for exposing new artists, one's that others haven't heard of. I don't need someone telling me why I should be listening to Timberlake. I wouldn't listen to him anyway. I like listening to obscure music. I like discovering obscure music. I like it when my friends scratch their heads when I say, "Have you heard the new album from Societys Parasites?" That's where this site needs to head. Where people look for the mainstream alternative. People who are bored with radio/MTV/force fed music and are looking for something different.

I don't mean to ruffle any feathers here, but I've noticed (and posted on a) Lupe Fiasco thread.  The Arcade Fire gets discussed here... I'd imagine they probably don't need any publicity either.

What's the metric for determining what can and cannot be discussed on this site?

The point is that Music Emissions is about finding out about up and coming acts, unheard of acts, acts that don't get MTV play. It's the way it always has been and the way it always will be. Symph, if that JT review ever goes on this site, it will be torn down "Until The End Of Time". I'm not saying "don't listen to it". I'm saying don't give these guys any more fucking press.

I'm on board with you... just because its popular (on MTV) doesn't mean that its bad.  Agreed with your point, an important caveat, often it will be bad, but it is important to be open minded with new artists in addition to established pop acts.
