“I’d like to thank you all for nothing at all.” – Wilco, ‘Misunderstood’

So, did local hero Chad Vangaalen win his Juno last night? I try to avoid award shows, as they usually end up being a Mutual Admiration Society circle-jerks, but I was kinda interested in this one, as not only did Chad get a nod, but also Edmonchuck’s Shout Out Out Out Out, whose Not Saying/Just Saying causes me to shake my booty constantly despite having a person named Gravy in the band.

Here’s my prediction, though: Malajube got it, because they’re French-Canadian, and we have the nasty habit here in Canada of patronizing our Francophone citizens as though they were the neighbourhood retards; which is sad, as while Malajube isn’t my cup of tea, they’re definitely putting out material that’s both engaging and inspired. Watch, next they’ll put out a song in English and then disappear into radio oblivion.

Anyway: this is me being happy for all three nominees. Canadian music rawks.

Latest Acquisitions:

Silversun Pickups, Carnavas – Holy shit. Two songs in and I’ve already blown my load. This is like the first time I heard the Pixies, or Jawbreaker: it makes me excited to listen to music again. Plus, Brian Aubert possesses the kind of man-child vocals that causes people like Billy Corgan to curse the day their testicles dropped.

Kings Of Leon, Because Of The Times – can someone please explain to me the opposite sex’s attraction to hairy, sweaty hippy types? I honestly don’t get it. When did it become hawt to look like you just fell out of a rape van?

The Ponys, Turn The Lights Out – no-nonsense indie rock a la Afghan Whigs; there’s something really dark about these guys that I haven’t quite figured out yet. I’ll get it, don’t you worry…

Sleater-Kinney, Digg Me Out – because chicks with guitars are hot.

So I just checked out the Juno winners: City & Colour won? Seriously? Fuck you. No, really. Dallas Green and his sensitive new-age clonecore outfit (I wish)Alexis(was)onfire had passed their ‘best-before’ expiry date long ago. City & Colour is garbage best suited for selling cel-phone plans to pre-teen girls.

Looking at the rest of the winners (and overall nominees, at that) only confirms my suspicions: the Junos really don’t matter, and are instead just a way for the record industry to suck itself off. Kudos to rapper/genius k-os for pointing this out during his performance – it’s just too bad that every Canadian journalist seems to have bought in to the whole solidarity package, writing off k-os’ live comments as sour grapes for not winning a Juno…but honestly, people; I’m a sucker for Nelly Furtado’s club-fare as much as the next guy, but when we’re calling her the BEST that Canada has to offer, we’re seriously deluding ourselves.

Canadian music sucks.

Thanks for the shout-out guys!

Silversun Pickups are indeed musical love. Comparisons to Corgan and his undescended Pumpkins are very accurate.

Do like Malajube as well. Not love, but like.

As for Kings of Leon, egh...I've heard one or two of their songs ("On Call") and they're alright, but I can't seem to get pulled deeper into them. And Dennis, if you like 'em you should try out Ghostland Observatory. Much more dance-orientated, and very odd (key word very)....but hell you just may take a liking to them.

You're right, it was actually Schmitty's comments about them that made me pick the cd up. I subscribe to his actual blog now, because he speaks TRUTH and WISDOM.

...and, yes, I haven't paid attention to the Junos for quite some time; it was simply the inclusion of CVG and Shout Outx4, etc, that perked my ears up. it's like watching Scorcese, wearing a grin that says he's gonna fuck your eyes in his sleep, as he's passed over again and again for an Oscar,a nd then he goes and wins for a lacklustre effort like 'The Departed'. Just you watch: Tarantino and Rodriguez will get the same thing for this Grindhouse crap they're spewing...

Chris, mschmitt has been telling us all how great the Silversun Pickups album is. You need to listen to this boy. He knows good music and can write about it too. Watch his reviews closely.

Kings Of Leon - I really enjoyed this one. Hell, I enjoyed their last one too. I love their hairy asses.

And awards shows - Damn, I can't believe you would even care about these "Circle jerks". I gave up on them ages ago. The only one that I even pay any attention to these days is the online Plug Awards. These are all people's choice and are actually relevant.
