I'm in a funk and I can't get out

I'm sure every reviewer on this site sometimes feels this way. You get tired of listening to new music. I get to the point sometimes where I really couldn't care about the next album that comes in the mail. I'm feeling a little like that right now. So I'm reaching for some older albums to get me inspired again.

I just finished a couple of Boards of Canada albums. Let it be duly noted that BOC is great music to get down to work to, provided that work is not new album reviews. It just serves as great background music. If you haven't heard Music Has The Right To Children then you have to run out and get (or download) right this instant. Seriously.

I also just finished relistening to At War With The Mystics by The Flaming Lips. I kind of dismissed this album when it came out and have only got around to giving it a second glance now. It's good. Sure, not as good as the previous two Lips albums but good just the same. At least this band is moving forward rather than resting on their laurels.

Right now I found Fugazi's Repeater. And honestly, this is on my all-time favorite list. It's just catchy post-punk that goes down quite nicely.

I've got Buffalo Tom and Built To Spill lined up for play next. I get to see Built To Spill tomorrow night and am SO excited. Their first time in Calgary.

Now here's what I hate. A friend, a fellow music-lover comes up to you and asks "What have you been listening to lately?" And you don't have an answer. You can't remember the last 20 albums you listened to because you are going through them like crazy and not spending quality time with them. When it comes to making your year-end list and you can't think of any decent albums that deserve to be on the list. That's when I hate this job. I remember when I used to buy an album and spend weeks/months with it, becoming intimate with every note/lyric/song. I long for those days again. It's hard right now because of the fall rush of music. I'm getting 10 albums a day to review and really only cranking out 1-2 (maybe) a day. And then forgetting all about them by the next week.

Anyway, I'm out to win this silly little contest we reviewers are having and need to blast out a bunch more reviews before Sunday. Maybe...
