I wrote this about a year and a half ago...It included some other songs of poppy nature, but I've conveniently discluded them from my "classic blog" repost today. As the Chinese would say, enjoy...
So many CD's, so little time. What do you say to joining me on the beauty of procrastination? Lets make my first published compilation.
Since I owned my first double deck tape/vinyl stereo I can remember scotch taping the hole's on Memorex 120's (or something towards that affect), and pass 'em along to my friends. Over the years as technology advanced, so did my generosity. Soon after becoming Manager of the now defunct Sound Source (1st of two indie music stores), I purchased a CD burner and began burning comps for customers and friends through the barely known world of CD-RW. I say uncommon, cos got dammit, they were expensive and a real b*tch to find. Speaking of vulgar language... Before you investigate any further into this compilation you may or may not decide to request, please consider all my compilations are *PARENTAL ADVISORY*, whether or not they have curses. I won't even bother to check.
Back to the topic at hand...Just recently I've gotten a rash of old friends, acquaintance's and random humans requesting my signature compilations. Though I'm not positive any of these friends have much in common, I am positive they all like my taste in music. "Comon I need new stuff", or the always saddening, "My collection is getting boring, burn me sumpin'". I guess its time to multi-task a few idea's here.
So here we go with the No Trend compilations, one more time. No Trend was the name I gave ALL my compilations back in the days of 1998, (laughs). Also used for a spurt in 2002, I guess this would make it book three. As for Volume One of Book Three, its real simple...cover songs. There are a lot of cover songs out there to choose from, and I should be pattin' myself on the back for cutting it down to 79 minutes. Trust me, I've forgotten more than I know. So, take out that Now Vol. 4 (currently collecting dust) compilation in that last space of your CD magazine, and make room for No Trend Vol.1. The Cover Songs edition.
No Trend Book Three Vol.1The Cover Songs Edition

KRS-One Sublime 40 Oz. To Freedom
When I thought about which tune to lead off with, I contemplated long and hard. What better song than a song that tributes an artist for its influence. Whilst not a cover song, KRS1 is the epitome of why artists cover songs to begin with.

On The Run Easy Star All-Stars Dub Side Of The Moon
Thats right, someone had the nerve to cover Pink Floyd's classic "Dark Side Of The Moon". If you havent heard by now, its damn good. This particular piece is merely a taste of the synchronicity involved on this album. "On The Run" is an outstanding breed of Dub, Drum and Bass.
Tiny Dancer Dave Grohl, live on Late Night With Craig Kilborn *not available in stores*
Originally written by Elton John, Tiny Dancer jiggled our culture once again when the cinematic smash "Almost Famous" hit theaters. Grohl (of Nirvana/Foo Fighters fame), one of the most clever performers today, adds a great power and humor with only his voice and guitar.
Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) Stevie Ray Vaughn- Couldn't Stand the Weather
A challenge to all music lovers. Find someone who doesn't know who SRV is, and plug them with facts about this legend till your face is blue. Of course as most know, originally written by another geetar freestyler, Jimi Hendrix, this version of Voodoo Chile is the cleanest you'll EVER hear it covered. My father must be proud...
Simple Man The Deftones B-Sides and Rarities
Another 70's hit, originally tabbed by the legendary Lynard Skynard, The Deftones take their own brand of drop d-tuning and melt it like buttah (thats right buttah, not butter). Once again, Pops influencing...
Daniel Brett Scallion (Fuel) *Unplugged and unavailable as far as I can tell*
My stepmother told me, "Whomever was singing that Elton John song wasn't doing very well". In a way she has a point, as his scratchy Fuel style does infect the lyrics a bit. Howevever, some of us Gen X'ers like that scratchy sh*t.
Scarlet Begonias Sublime 40 Oz. To Freedom
Yes, Sublime/40 again. Only this time they're actually covering a band. I'm sure you've all heard of Grateful Dead, but did you really know this now Reggae/Rap classic was originally written by Jerry Garcia?

Boys Dont Cry Oleander FebruarySon
Not too long ago, Oleander was a very talked about name in Modern Rock. Well, it seems Modern has become the past, and Oleander hasn't really gone with the times. Regardless, their cover of The Cure's "Boys Dont Cry" is definitley an upgrade, I dont care what The Cure freaks have to say about it.

Killing Me Softly The Fugees The Score
While its my Mom's 60's Soul/R&B influence that originally introduced me to this song on Clean Up Saturday mornings, its The Fugees (Lauryn Hill, Pras, and of course Wyclef Jean) who energize this song to make it one of the most popular cover's in music history.

Boyz-N-The Hood Dynamite Hack Superfast
Not completely a cover song, Austin, TX's very own Dynamite Hack acoustically cover one of the most popular hits of 80's Rap, NWA's "Boyz-N-The Hood". Thats right, acoustic...

Leaving On A Jet Plane Slightly Stoopid Everything You Need
Is the Reggae/Acoustic world invading John Denver's catalogue? No actually a lot of people have covered this classic. I may be biased but I believe this is the best version.

Hallelujah Jeff Buckley Grace
Alright, let's be honest here...The first time I heard the Leonard Cohen version I freaked out thinking, 'O no someone is trying to match Buckley. Then I began to hear the grimey audio of it all and realized this 6:53 seconds of vocal explosion, and testament was written by Cohen for Buckley, whether he realized it or not. Combine one of the best song-writers in the history of music with the most talented Male Soprano voice ever to be recorded and you have a memorable song at the very least.
Ordinary Love The Deftones B-Sides and Rarities
Yea, The Deftones go twice in line as most will agree its simply worth the space. Besides, The Deftones' B-Sides and Rarities is tearing up my computer lately. Simply a thing of genius as Chino Moreno's voice is the Metal equivalent to Sade. Most importantly is the guitar work as it sets this song on fire with its perfect Slo-Metal tempo.

Boys Of Summer The Atari's So Long Astoria
I still remember camping on East Long Island with my family, in the background Don Henley's voice soothing my parents and their friends as they sing along. The new generation has always managed to speed things up, and The Atari's are no exception to this rule. Pop Punked up, this 80's classic was reborn.

Hot For Teacher Slow Roosevelt Come On Feel The Metal
Without a doubt, the best cover I've ever heard in terms of improvement upon the song. I know, I know this is Van Halen... How does one artist blow Van Halen out of the water? Texas' Slo Ro' slices open the heart of this song with a quick edged, distortion pedal rebirth. Only David Lee Roth fanatics will argue this is not a better version. Extra rare, as its no longer in print...
*Wipes the sweat* Maaaad-own thats work...Well thats it...I hope I've revived some juices inside you about one artist or another...All requests for a copy of this CD should go to brian@musicemissions.com
Comments:
The Cure cover is NOT an improvement and neither is Don Henley. But other than that....good compilation.
