Friday night I treated myself to a dedicated listening to the Shins new album "Wincing the Night Away" and a Sandhill Cab/Merlot. Both fine companions for each other. The Shins continue to be proficient in effortless melodies and visual imagery... the kind that make you say "now why didn't I think of that?" Nothing is forced or contrived but it all sounds soothing and familiar while still being unique, and slightly intoxicating (or was that the wine?)
Well, I'm not sure if it was the after-effects of the Shins, but last night I had the craziest dream. Ever have those dreams where you are asleep in your dream and you "wake up" in your dream but you're still dreaming? Anyway I was awakened in my dream by a dog biting my hand and I could feel his teeth sinking between the bones. I had to kick him to get him to let go and I suddenly realized that he knew that something was wrong, so I went out to the rest of the house to see what was going on. I passed through the bathroom, which was swaying back and forth like on a boat, and met a group of old people having tea. "Have a cup of tea." they said and I was like "uh, no I think I have to check on something"
So I go out to the back of the house where there is a huge sunroom with walls and ceiling all out of glass. I can see these huge clouds rolling through the countryside and they suddenly turn to smoke, weaving themselves in and out of the regular clouds. I look down to the fields below and see that there are waves of something moving ... crawling up to the house. One of the windows breaks behind me and it's a 2 foot tall Blue Meanie, like the ones from the Yellow Submarine movie, and he bites me on the same hand that the dog had. Suddenly, outside the house is swarming with tiny Blue Meanies and I am, at first, thinking they are harmless .. they're pretty small after all, and I kick a few away. Well, shit, 7 of them jump on me and I realize that I better get back to warn the old people in the house .....
I wake up before I can get back.
and, naturally, "All you need is Love" will be stuck in my head all day now.

Good show. I was just getting into them at the time. They opened for Mercury Rev who were also amazing. They had a good, fun, small venue type presence.

that would be an great show. Closest they're coming this year is Toronto .. dammit.
How does the live show compare? Their albums have a definite "studio" feel to them.

That's messed up dude. Stick to the cheap wine and you should be OK.
Although, I do think that the Shins COULD possibly induce dream like behavior but I'm not sure.
Did I mention that I saw them in Frisco a couple years ago? Sweet show.
