A simple question: why do the Greeks in "300" all speak with British -- and sometimes Welsh -- accents?

Well, here's what I've been listening to lately:

Malajube--Trompe-l'Oeil: A great post-punk discovery from French Canada. I've posted a review on them if you want to read a bit more about them here. They've got really smashing drum beats and very cool melodies, not to mention the exotic effect of their French lyrics. Its almost just another instrument, because I -- not knowing a lick of French -- can't tell what the heck they're singing about...and sometimes that's a good thing with bands.

!!!: I know these guys get enough press as it is, but I've stumbled across their track "Bend Over Beethoven" and I'm obssessed. Very interesting band, very interesting song.

The Mountain Goats--Get Lonely: John Darnielle's voice has me hooked. I got this CD last year but never gave it the serious listening time it deserved. Songs like "Maybe Sprout Wings" and "In the Hidden Places" are wonderful and this band deserves a ton more coverage.

In other news, my interview for the honors program at Roosevelt University in Chicago was this past Wedensday, and it went very well. Cross your fingers for a good news! Also, I've begun the tough emo article. Here's the roots:

To all noobs, newcomers, and those who haven’t yet ventured to dare into the blasted landscape of online music, there is a topic you should heed. There is a topic that – when brought up – incites otherwise tranquil and friendly peers into a fiery destructive rage: emo music. Even now I can feel people’s blood pressure rising. Guardians of the original genre rage against the "shallow" newcomers. Modern dashboard confessionalists rise up in arms, demanding respect for their new brand of the genre. And then there’s the press, pushing the label down the throats of any new band with a hint of eyeliner or introspective lyrics—whether they deserve it or not. All of this is the turbulent surface to a burning underlying question that no one seems able (or willing) to answer: What the hell is emo music anyway? By selecting the most prominent emo bands of then and now – dissecting each to the point of insanity – perhaps unifying themes will shed light on a dark and very misunderstood genre.

Even weirder, 300 was filmed entirely in Montreal / L.A. and not between Cardiff / Swansea as it seemed to you - where tey fighting with Leeks or Playing Rugby?

I'm looking forward to the full 'emo' piece; normally, I'd avoid anything on the topic, but your paragraph got me hooked.

300: c'mon, now - it's common knowledge that everyone before 1910 spoke the Queen's English (or various forms thereof). Even the Asians.

It could be worse - they could sound like they're from Orange County, CA.

Tallahassee and Sunset Tree are two more great albums by The Mountain Goats. Be sure and check into them.

And about your emo piece, good luck with that. Note: You will piss people off about the subject, guaranteed. It doesn't matter what position you take on the subject but, it wouldn't be emo if someone wasn't pissed off! I'm excited to read it.

I watched 300 yesterday. Goddamn it, why did I build it up so much? The funniest part is when one of the Persian guards is falling into the black pit... backstroke? Reverse breaststroke?

Sweet intro to the emo piece btw.
