Ever wonder what kind of geniuses run record companies? The latest tidbit is that Universal Music Group is pushing to sell CD's at $10 a pop. The question I ask is, what the f*** took them so bloody long? This would have helped them 5 years ago, but I think that for most people, they have moved on to digital downloads.

Oy, this is complicated.

One more thing that the age of the global internet has exposed is the underbelly of the old music industry in the European Union. A new proposal has revealed the industry as a creaky, old patchwork of different states controlling the licensing rights to music in their territories.

So, why are some musicians opposing the legislation? You wou

So, Kid Rock (aka Robert J. Ritchie) advocates stealing his music.

He also says that iTunes and all the other online music stores are a new version of the old music industry where everyone gets a bigger cut than the artists themselves. Apparently, Robert doesn't understand the online model that Apple follows whereby the music company takes the lion's share of the pie and Apple is lef

Just heard the Ataris cover of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer." I think that I prefer the original.

This isn't always the case. There are remakes that I have preferred over the originals. Briefly, some of them are:

Johnny Cash's cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"

Another Johnny Cash cover that I prefer is (of Trent Reznor's) "Hurt"

Alien Ant Farm's cover of Wacko Jacko's "Smooth Criminal"

The Corrs cover of Fleetwoo

So, since we're all pirating criminals here in Canada, the Copyright Board of Canada (along with a little push from the American RIAA probably) has set a new guideline for a digital media tax that would help those poor, long suffering labels take care of their musicians.

About bloody time. Money quotes:"...So who killed the record industry as we knew it? "The record companies have created this situation themselves," says Simon Wright, CEO of Virgin Entertainment Group, which operates Virgin Megastores..."<br>

"They left billions and billions of dollars on the table by suing Napster -- that was the moment that the labels killed themselves," says Jeff Kwatinetz, CEO of management company the Firm. "The record busin

Sitting here at work with my "AM Hits of the 70's" playlist blaring through my headphones I realised something. We classify others by seemingly stupid categories like how they look, the clothes they wear, the cars they drive, the beer they drink, the computers they use, the god they worship. Now by the songs on their freaking iTunes playlists? I'll let you in on a little secret: I really don't care if you find my love of 70's music just a little sad.
