There's something about a man's falsetto that just pulls me closer to it. Perhaps it is the vulnerability in it, the shaky, winding sound of a little boy crying out of a man. Maybe its because it resembles a woman's voice, something familiar. I confess, it appeals to me mostly because I don't know.
Justin Vernon, like many talented artists, is full of contradictions. His voice is somewhat unrepressed but somewhat cautious, his lyrics a little sad but so profoundly wise. He hones his mys

By now the word as gotten out about Fleet Foxes, but my own affaire de coure with them came this summer. I don't do this every time I hear a new song or band, but I enjoy listening to new music while traveling. That way I expose myself to new music in new places: music in context. It really all started in middle school, in Italy, with a br

Recently Coldplay released their highly anticipated, ill-named "Viva La Vida," an album which is apparently inspired by Frida Kahlo. Lately they've been all over the radio and on TV, donning jackets that look like they belonged to American Civil War soldiers, joking about how they "owe Radiohead (their) entire career" (Newsweek). Lately, they are not looking like themselves. But who is Coldplay these days?
What is interesting about Coldplay is people are still afraid

I posted this already, but it's a little hard to find. I love this band, they're from my home town and they kick a lot of indie-folk-butt. Here's my two cents.
The Finch's debut album, Human Like a House, is a fine start. Half of the San Francisco-based folk duo is Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs (yes, Pennypacker), who's songwriting shines through simple melodies in songs like "Last Favor" and "Step Outside" (fields of flies/they wave their wire

The first time i heard "These Days" by Nico was in the Royal Tenenbaums, the film by Wes Anderson. I downloaded the song a couple days later after I watched the movie. It was my junior year of high school. Like all new songs I went through a routine: I'd listen to the first half, listen to something else, then go back to it, and eventually listen to the entire thing but skipping ahead before the few final seconds.

There is a song that I like: "Salty Dog," not by Bob Dylan, but the remake by Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power. It's a beautiful song, remade with Marshall's own personal style, which, in a sense, is very Dylan-esque. Her album "The Covers Album" is all remakes of her favorite songs, ranging from the Stones to the Velvet Underground and of course Dylan. As a long time admirer, she traveled from state to sta

There were two really highly anticipated albums that came out this month. One was Distortion, by the Magnetic Fields. The second, Jukebox by Cat Power, which I'll write about later.
DISTORTION: It came out the 15th and I bought it as soon as I woke up. I've been waiting for this album ever since I heard about it six months ago. Not so much because I'm a huge Magnetic Field's fan (but I like them a lot). More that it was a sequel to Psychocandy, probably one of the best albums
