So earlier a guy was telling me about how musicians these days are copying other artists or doing something similar to music that's already been done.  Now correct me if i'm wrong but wouldn't this mean that everything is depicted off of some other format.  Shit, breathing is being copied off of that first bastard who found out about oxygen....the asshole.  Anyway, he only listened to alternative, grunge, and anything heavy.  Now i'm pretty sure that if you narrow your search to a certain genre, ALL the music is going to sound the same eventually.  And if one band comes out that sounds like another band, that's just life.  It happens alot if you keep a narrow mind about these things.  I constantly hear about how there is no originality, which is BS, but in some ways true only because there are certain genres that have been out for a while and it's inevitable to always here something new.  This isn't just in music but everything in general.  Sonic=Mario, Pasta=stringy Pizza, etc.  That's pretty much all.  If you wanna listen to something new, then find something new.

PS.  Playing an instrument does not make you an expert on music, it just means you can play an instrument.

You can look at it as an optimist and realize that the possibilities of music are endless, and while you may pick up on influences in just about every band, it doesn't mean they're coasting away on the merits of someone else's work. Or, you can be a pessimist and say that all music lacks originality because the first (insert genre) album has already been made, or the first (insert subgenre) album has been done. I tend to see both sides, but am totally an optimist, who can find a new high on a new song every time he hears a new album. I can't imagine the enjoyment someone who lacks belief in their music's ability to amaze or compel must take in. Must be rather minimal. And playing and instrument does not make you a music expert, but it does get you closer to being able to claim as much.
